Wernick�s first piano sonata has been described by the composer as a �musical witch�s brew of anger, savagery, lyricism, and unabashed sentiment.� Commissioned by pianist Lambert Orkis, the sonata is the composer�s longest work (42 minutes) and was premiered by Orkis at the Hirshhorn Museum in 1983; the sonata is recorded by Orkis on Bridge Records. Its three movements are titled: �... in the forehead of the morning sky,� Fragments of Things Remembered, and Reflections of a Dark Light.
