JohannPachelbel(1653-1706)Johann Pachelbel wasa leading organist andcomposer of the Baroqueperiod. Most of hiscompositions are sacredchoral music and organsolos featuring elaboratecounterpoint. He was awell-respected teacher, andone of his students was J.S.Bach s father.Pachelbel composed hisCanon and Gigue in DMajor for 3 Violins andContinuo, or bass-andchordsaccompaniment. Theterm canon signifies thatall three violinists playedthe same part, startingat different times, justlike a round. Pachelbel sCanon is also a chaconne,which means it is builtover a repeating chordprogression.
